The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK (Developer's Library)

Review

“This book would be a bargain at ten times its price! If you are writing iPhone software, it will save you weeks of development time. Don’t waste your money.
This book relies far too heavily on undocumented APIs and third-party add-ons, both of which will break whenever Apple updates the OS.

Too much reliance on undocumented APIs
If you want to distribute your app in the App Store and not have it rejected by Apple, this book is chock full of stuff you can’t use.

A fantastic resource that you’ll refer to again and again
I usually buy a book, flip through it, and rarely open it again. This book has been one that I refer to again and again. The examples are well written and focused.

Useful tidbits but should not be your first choice
This book is a real mixed bag. I wish I could give a straight 2.5 stars rating. On the one hand, there are some valuable tips interspersed throughout (one tossed off reference…

    Not for beginners
This book is not well suited for those trying to learn how to build applications for the iPhone. The book reads well, but the code and examples do not follow the conventions used…

    Author is incompetent
I’m sorry, but the person who wrote this book didn’t do her homework. She specifically states that Objective-C supports multiple inheritance. This is not true.

The worst developer book I ever purchased
I’ve been developing software for years, and this is the first book I’ve ever purchased for assisting with development, that was totally useless.

    Perfect for seasoned programmers
If you’re an accomplished Objective C programmer then this book really help you understand the fine points of iPhone programming.

    Good stuff but not enough
I’ve been working through this book to develop an iPhone application. The book starts out well but then goes off in directions where a lot of Objective C experience is assumed and…

The wireless industry is a notoriously tough nut to crack, and it's become pretty clear that the first iPhone wasn't about total domination so much as priming the market and making a good first impression with some very dissatisfied cellphone users. With the iPhone 3G, though, Apple's playing for keeps!
